Reflect back about what you knew about disabled sports on the first day of class? - I have never paid attention to disability sports before. Yes, I have heard of it but just never watched it. Usually, these depictions emphasize inspiring the audience over really reflecting the reality of the disabled individual. Though sometimes well-meaning, inspiration porn is harmful since it dehumanizes handicapped people, lowers their identity to their impairment, and distracts from the actual obstacles they encounter, ...

Discuss if you think the ban of Russia and Belarus from the last few Paralympic Games is fair and in alignment with the IPC values...do you think the IPC is making the right decision?  -  Controversial but important reaction to the geopolitical scenario following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) decision to bar Russian and Belarusian athletes from the most recent Paralympic Games has drawn much debate. The IPC first permitted these athletes to compete under a neutral flag at the 2022 Winter Paralympics; however, following protests and threats of boycotts from other countries, it changed its mind. Though this suspension was eventually reversed on procedural grounds, the IPC subsequently suspended National Paralympic Committees for both countries for failing to maintain ideals of fair play and ethical behavior. Most recently, the IPC decided to let Neutral Paralympic Athletes from Russia and Belarus compete at the Paris 2...

Paralympics Sports Medicine and Science By classifying athletes with physical disabilities according to the severity of their condition and how it affects their ability to compete, Paralympic classification systems aim to guarantee fair competition. Based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF), classification entails evaluating body structure (e.g., limb deficit, short stature), activity limits, and impairments of bodily functions (e.g., muscle strength, coordination). Four steps make up the classification process: evaluating the athlete's health, verifying eligibility, identifying the extent of the impairment, and allocating the right competition class. Although it is still difficult to obtain consistent and trustworthy results, current methods rely on a variety of evaluation techniques, including manual muscle testing, goniometry, and coordination examinations. Combining sport-specific activities, new motor tasks, impairment evaluation,...
